It was sort of a miracle that I was in Hartford for the UCC (United Church
of Christ) 50th Synod. However, I had mainly come to hear Barack Obama address
the crown of 10,000 or more, so that wasn’t really a miracle. The
miracle was that after his speech my wife and I ran into David Clark, who
many of you remember. David was working at a booth on the vendor floor.
I met David at computer camp in the late 1980's when he was a high school
student. He participated in the Daedalus Project funded by the State Department
of Education. The success on computers of this group of youngsters, many
with cerebral palsy, marked my start in assistive technology. In fact, for
many years David claimed credit for me being known in the assistive technology
community.
Seeing David again in Hartford was quite a thrill. He is now in his mid
thirties, employed by the Institute for Community Inclusion at UMass Boston
as their database developer. He is also Clerk of Council for the Old South
Church in Boston, and was a delegate at the Synod. He seemed to be something
of a celebrity in the Synod and gave a reading on the stage to start the
final worship service. Quite a thrill for me and the crowd of several thousand.
Then it was out the back door for David to meet his ride to the bus for
the journey back to Boston. As he rode away I thought how good it was to
see him again and how fortunate I am to know him!
