Whirlwind Wheelchair International Ralf Hotchkiss is Technical Director of Whirlwind Wheelchair International. The WWI mission is to enable people with disabilities to create mobility equipment. The WWI wheelchair is a low-cost lightweight, foldable wheelchair made of local material and durable enough to withstand rugged terrain. Employing Whirlwind's design and guidance, over 30 shops in twenty five countries have begun producing whirlwind wheelchairs. In 1989 WWI became a part of San Francisco State University's Engineering Department and continues to improve upon the original design. A Whirlwind Wheelchair (right) built at the Lemelson AT Center by Hampshire College students after a course taught by Ralf Hotchkiss. |

HealthWrights
David Werner is co-founder of HealthWrights, a workgroup for people's health and rights.
One of the projects of HealthWrights, the PROJIMO Rehabilitation Program in rural Mexico. This involves a remarkable village program where young disabled persons help each other to learn a variety of skills: everything from making wheelchairs and orthopedic braces to providing rehabilitation and advice to disabled children and their families.
They also offer an intensive conversational
Spanish training program where the teachers are young spinal cord injured persons
and other disabled youth who earn their living by teaching.

The HealthWrights Program has an
extensive web page list quite a variety of ways people can help support their
program.
