I'm sure many of you remember Professor Thomas Powell who had such an impact
in the field of programs for those with severe disabilities while at UConn.
He founded the UConn program for severe disabilities that attracted super
students and the Sibling Information Network.
He
wrote and presented extensively and had quite an impact on students, faculty
and parents. I well remember his elequont argument against the notion of some
that euthenesia is an acceptable response for certain children born with severe
disabilities. It was a significant loss for UConn and Connecticut when Tom
left for Montana.
Since his work as professor and dean at Montana State University, Tom went on to become Professor of Education and Dean at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina. From Winthrop Tom moved on to become President of Glenville State College in Glenville, West Virginia. In October of this year Nancy and I traveled down to Emmetsburg, Maryland to witness the inauguragation of Dr. Powell as 24th president of Mount St. Mary's College and Seminary. It was a week long celebration and as you might imagine, they already love Dr. Powell and his wife Irene at "The Mount." Mount St. Mary's is the oldest Catholic college and seminary in the United States. If you didn't know Tom, he's the one on the left.
