Touch Free Screen software allows a person with limited physical abilities to access the computer through a motion sensor switch. ( You select the type of movement the student will need to use to operate the switch which in turn operates the computer. For example movement of a finger or hand. The way we set it up was by tracing the students' hand on a sheet of paper to mark where he would place his hand , then we positioned the camera in place to see the hand, then when the student lifted his index finger the switch would work. You can also have a more gross motor movement such as lifting the entire hand )
We like the fact that even the most physically challenged person can access software through the use of this product. The manuals were easy to follow with step by step installation on both the camera and the software. The software will work with any software that operates with a switch. The best thing about the software is the fact that the slightest movement activates the switch.
We don't think the software is as consistent as it should be. It took 2-3 tries at switching to make the connection, which makes it unsuitable for training cause and effect. Also, the teacher cannot make it a "press and hold " switch to increase endurance. Neither is it useful for students with visual disabilities.
We think the software would appeal to most age groups. However, the age is not quite as important as the functioning level of the student. This software is not suited for a student with profound cognitive impairments as a tool for cause and effect training because it is not consistent enough. It is well suited for a student of higher cognitive abilities ( at least a preschooler level) who can make the connection between movement and computer action.
We think this could be a great tool in a variety of settings both work and school. I would love to see the " Press and Hold" option made available so that it is has more versatility for lower functioning students. You need to be prepared to take some time and planning to determine the movement that will work best and save the image .
