We rate this program a definite 10!!!! (on a scale of 1-10), Way Cool!

We really liked the program Word Munchers. The program makes you practice word recognition skills and have lots of fun at the same time. The game opens up to a three dimensional game board with words on each square. You move a stimulating and very colorful Muncher around the board trying to have him eat the words that you select. The player can select the level (grades 1 - 5) and the skill (adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, etc.). You can choose to play the game with pesky troggles, that try to devour your Muncher, or Troggle-free. The players can accumulate points as they make the right selections until they reach the 'Hall of Fame.'

The game is animated and colorful. The sound effects are great but the music is a little annoying. Ear phones would help if you were to play it by yourself. It's easy to install, easy to use, and the help button is very informative and entertaining. The player is rewarded with a 'way cool' version of a fairy tale when you complete three boards.

The only thing we didn't like about the program is that is really isn't appropriate for fifth graders. It's perfect for younger students and even kindergartners who are beginning to read. It's flashy and kept our attention. The age group is 5-9 years old.

Teacher comments

I totally agree with all of my students' comments. The program also came with some reinforcing worksheets that would be fun for the students who need the practice to use. Card games, crossword puzzles, and word finds were part of the package.

It's a great program and very competitive. You'd think you were at a football game. Even though the students said they were to old for this program, they enjoyed it and wanted to play it again.
